Madcap in TF2: The 10th Class As It Truly Is

Team Fortress 2 is an old game, ancient. The memory of modern people can hardly reach the period of its youth. In those dark times, TF2 was even funnier than now—a lot thanks to Madcap, a brilliant 10th class. It was added to the game and then cruelly removed by Valve.

Some dinosaur gamers still tell us stories about how wonderful it was to play Madcap in TF2! That sad year of 2008 took the guy from us… Do you believe in this story?

Who Is Madcap in TF2?

Madcap is in fact a fictional invention of the TF2 community. He was never part of Team Fortress 2! It’s just a joke, spread and supported on social media. Madcap exists to entertain TF2 players, since the game has not had significant updates for ages.

The True Origins of Madcap

A Steam user with the nickname Bog submitted a costume for Scout in TF2. The item was poorly designed, chunky and oversized. The name of that thing was Madcap.

the original Madcap costume

After receiving the Madcap submission in May 2012, Valve did not hesitate to proclaim it totally unsuitable for Scout. That was the only official involvement of the game developers.

The community decided that TF2 Madcap deserves much more—as a hilarious meme. The original costume got some attention in its early years, for how bad and therefore funny it was.

The Renaissance of Madcap started with the spread of AI tools, specifically to refine old images and generate new ones. Here is an approximate timeline.

  1. A fan-created version of Madcap was posted on Reddit. The costume was turned into a character. The author claimed that Madcap was the 10th class in TF2, removed by Valve in 2008.
  2. Other people in the TF2 community started sharing their fictional memories about how they played Madcap or how they know someone who played Madcap.
  3. The joke went as far as creating the lore and abilities of TF2 Madcap. The character class became “the best thing ever introduced to Team Fortress 2”.
  4. Eventually, some people really believed that Madcap existed.

No, Madcap is not a real class. It was never added to the TF2 roster. This story is a joke spread by multiple people in the Team Fortress 2 community.

Visual Design and the Story

The original cosmetic item dictates what the modern AI renders of Madcap look like. There is no more clumsiness in that costume, as it’s become a pretty cool jacket with a vintage military helmet.

Madcap himself is strongly based on Scout, the younger brother.

Considering the background of this character class, you can find many versions of his past and various descriptions of his personality. In general, the community agrees that Madcap is even more brutal than Scout. Someone even calls him bloodthirsty.

As for the gameplay features, Madcap is meant to play as TF2 Scout. Some parts of the lore suggest that after removing Madcap from Team Fortress 2—because they couldn’t balance his power and charisma—Valve let other character classes take his weapons. Madcap has been named as a source of Sniper’s SMG, Pyro’s Degreaser, and Scout’s Boston Basher.

Community Reception

While some players are really confused about the Madcap legend, the TF2 community in general loves spreading these rumors. People discuss all sorts of fictional aspects and add various juicy details.

The entire situation with Madcap is a sign that the game still has a dedicated fan base, hungry for more TF2 content.
